The 2006 film “The Garage,” is a coming of age film about a young mechanic working in his father’s small town garage and his dreams of escaping what he considers his nowhere existance. The film, set in 1970, has a lot of personal symbolism for director/writer Carl Thibault. For example, the family photos that adorn the walls in the opening scenes are personal family pictures with the last being that of lead character, Carl, as an adult. The photo is that of Thibault’s father taken in front of the actual garage portrayed in the film circa 1977.
There is also a truck raised on jacks in the photo which is a truck that Carl Thibault and his brother were almost killed in when they hit a telephone pole late one night.
More personal symbolism continues with the character of Schultz, a nickname for one of Thibault’s real childhood friends, as well as an actual photo of the three boys portrayed in the film taken in the 1970s. Based on Thibault’s personal memories working at his father’s garage (B & B Transmissions) this is a very personal film made all the better knowing of the rich symbolism hidden throughout the film.

The 2006 movie “The Garage” was about a mechanic in the 1970′s that worked for his father. The mechanic’s name is Matt and he had hopes and dreams of finally leaving his father’s garage and becoming more than what he already was. He then met a girl in town and after several family events, he now feels stuck in the small town. Though his best friend advised him to leave as soon as possible, he decided to stay.

The movie certainly had a good plot and with a 1 million budget, the movie was well accepted. The movie focuses on life choices and making decisions on your own. Though some people said that the movie’s plot was a little basic, Gabriel Marantz (Matt) was able to keep the movie going. The movie was by no means an award winner but definitely grabbed the hearts of those that watched the movie. As director Carl Thibault wrote the actual story line, it was still definitely a decent movie. The movie hit well with those from small towns with the same dreams and it definitely had good morals. The movie is still being sold on DVD and I believe more people should definitely watch the 2006 movie.

Need a break from all the Holiday blockbusters, fast cars, and superheroes. Head on over to The Garage. The 2006 Independent Film written and directed by Carl Thibault uses the classic metaphor of a garage to tell this highly relatable coming of age story. The Garage is set in the late 1970s and focuses on Matt who works in his father’s garage in his small hometown. Like many young men he dreams of something bigger and better.

While The Garage is set in a small town, it really could be set anywhere, as we all face that coming of age moment sooner or later where we need to break out on our own.You can find a quick rundown here In this case, the main focus is the relationship between Matt and his father. Does Matt’s considering leaving mean he is abandoning his father?

This story also compares different sides of the father-son relationship. Matt’s friend, for instance, does not have a positive relationship with his father, which contributes further to Matt’s confusion when it comes to moving on. Does moving out of one’s childhood home have to be and escape or can it simply be a way to move forward with one’s life without abandoning anyone?

Without any especially flashy “A-list” names in it’s reporitoire, The Garage, may be easy to miss, but if you’re looking for a good relatable coming of age story, this is something you may want to check out.

Matt a young adult working at his father’s garage in the late 1970′s, has dreams of leaving his small town existence behind and moving on to a much more extraordinary ambitious future. But deep family ties and strong feelings for a new girl that comes into his life may hinder Matt from making his escape from small town life. Matt is facing extreme pressure from his best friend Schultz who is trying to convince him that immediate departure is the best solution. For anyone who has grown up in a small town especially as a teenager most have one goal in mind and that is leaving the small town existence and finding something better more adventurous for yourself, to shake off the dull boring existence that surrounds most small town life.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. This movie really shows and relates to most teenagers and young adults because it shows the struggles one can go through when you are faced with the decision to either leave and find your own way following your dreams or stay in the life style you are so egger to get away from, for love that might happen to fall in your lap or your family ties and connections.
